As Rate Your Story Membership gears up for its 2023 Year, I wanted to take the time to share a secret to my success in publishing picture books. Mentor Texts!
Long before Mentor Text was a commonly used term, I heard Richard Peck tell conference attendees to "read 100 books before you try your hand at writing one." I took that fantastic advice to heart. I even took it one step further and became in the habit of reading as many as 50 - 100 books (or as many as I could get my hands) on for any given topic I was writing about. And it really paid off!
As a result, I believe our Mentor Text Talk is an extremely important Rate Your Story perk. While we invite everyone (even non-Members) to attend our Mentor talks live, it's not always possible. So Rate Your Story Members can catch the replays in our Rate Your Story Member Resource group on Facebook. These replays are available, along with our exciting Crafty Webinar Replays, for the Membership year.
This Sunday, January 8 marks our first Mentor Text Talk of the year! To start everyone off on the right foot, we will be reading and discussing a few picture books that also teach elements of story! How fun is that? There's always so much learning and takeaway value to reading, especially when we discuss the books together.
